Sharpening

Black Robin Knife Sharpening offers 2 options for this service.

I sharpen knives and tools at the Clevedon Farmers Market every Sunday from 8.30 - 1.00pm. Bring your things, drop them with me first, cruise around, have breakfast then pick them up sharpened around 40 minutes later.

I am now offering a knife (and scissor) sharpening service via courier.

Step 1:

Contact me by text or call 022 642 0775, to arrange to have a knife box sent to your address.

Step 2:

Pack your knives etc in the knife box, screw the lid down.

Replace the courier label with the prepaid courier return label that came inside the box.

Drop off at your nearest NZPost Agent.

Step 3:

I receive the knives and text or email you the bill, you pay online.

Step 4:

I sharpen the knives and courier them back to you carefully wrapped up,
the same or the next day.

Step 5:

You re-discover where the band-aids are kept.

I do not sharpen saws, that is a saw doctors job.

People often bring me knives and tools that are less than beautiful but have served faithfully for years and years. It brings me great pleasure to take a banged up knife and return it just like new.

 Linisher sharpening

A linisher is a large belt sander that stands on a bench or platform. If the knives are in a very sorry state, a coarse grade of grit might be required to remove large amounts of steel quickly such as when chips are broken out on the cutting edge or the tip of the knife is broken and needs to be reshaped. After getting the knife into shape the rest of the job is about returning a polished razor cutting edge to the knife. The final act is polishing the new edge with a buffing wheel and honing paste for an edge you can shave with.

 Waterstone  Sharpening

This is the traditional method of returning an edge to knives, by moving through grades of stone from coarser to very fine.I would recommend using this method for all carbon steel Japanese blades, especially the harder steel knives from HRC 60 and up and all single bevel blades, carbon or stainless. I normally finish sharpening a knife on a 6000 grit stone.Using whetstones takes about three times as long as a linisher so there is a corresponding difference in price but they do give a lovely finish.
